| This is SCULLY. She is a 6 year old fennec fox.
They are the smallest fox, with distinctively
large ears, a cream-colored coat and a black-tipped tail. They are mainly
nocturnal and have a shy nature. They are omnivorous, eating plants, small
rodents, bird eggs, reptiles and insects. They like to live in burrows in
the sandy deserts of North Africa and throughout the Sahara, including
Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt.
The Fennec Fox is similar to other foxes, but has larger eyes and
very large ears to radiate heat. Their muzzle is narrow and pointed.
Their fur is thick and soft; the coloration is light sandy on the back
and sides, though paler on the sides, and serves as camouflage to
blend in with the desert sand. Their underside is white, and their
bushy tail and outside of their ears are reddish brown. Their light
color also absorbs less heat to help the Fennec Fox stay cool. The
fur is fine and thick with longer guard hairs covering a dense wooly
undercoat. Heavy fur is unusual for desert dwelling animals, but it
insulates the Fennec Fox from the cold nights as well as the daytime
heat. Its feet are thicky furred to insulate its pads from the hot
desert sand and to cushion its step which makes its movements quiet
and difficult to detect while hunting. Fennec Foxes are able to
survive a long time without water.
Extremely agile, they can jump two feet straight up from a standing
position and make horizontal leaps of up to four feet.
